A quick-thinking police officer in White Settlement, Texas, thwarted a sophisticated scam involving a Chase Bank impersonator and an elderly victim, preventing her from depositing $40,000 into a Bitcoin ATM.

The Scam Unfolds

On June 19, the White Settlement Police Department received a call from a concerned citizen who observed an elderly woman depositing large sums of cash into a Bitcoin ATM. Suspecting foul play after overhearing the woman’s phone conversation, the citizen alerted the authorities.

Modus Operandi

The scam began with the impersonator posing as a Chase Bank representative, convincing the victim to withdraw $40,000. The caller ID displayed “Chase Bank,” adding credibility to the ruse. The perpetrator even arranged for a ride service to escort the woman to a local Chase Bank branch for the withdrawal. From there, they directed her to a nearby convenience store housing a Bitcoin ATM to deposit the funds.

Police Intervention

Dashcam footage captured the moment Sergeant James Stewart intervened at the scene, halting any further transactions. Despite already depositing $23,900 into the Bitcoin ATM, swift police action prevented additional losses. The authorities are now collaborating with government agencies to recover the funds and return them to the victim.

Community Response

Reflecting on the incident, Sergeant Stewart empathized with the victim, likening her to his own mother. He expressed a strong desire to apprehend the perpetrator to prevent future victims from falling prey to such scams.

Acknowledgment and Gratitude

Chief of Police Christopher Cook expressed gratitude towards the vigilant citizen whose prompt action helped prevent further financial loss. The department plans to honor the citizen during an upcoming council meeting for their pivotal role in safeguarding the victim.

Conclusion

The incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by sophisticated scams targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly through digital means like Bitcoin ATMs. Prompt intervention by law enforcement and community vigilance remain crucial in combating such fraudulent activities and protecting community members from financial exploitation.
